Melanin and Pheomelanin

Pheomelanin is phototoxic, meaning the sunlight causes it to become toxic to the bodily system and it is also a pro-oxidant, meaning it will strip electrons (energy) away from other cells (oxidation), thus killing them, sort of like a scavenger or a parasite, this process is also associated with the inflammatory process utilized by the immune system and can be likened to the burning of a flame (fire is rapid oxidation).

Pheomelanin has a more spherical shape.

Eumelanin has a more elliptical shape, said shape is said to be more wave/frequency inclusive.

Pheomelanin needs an abundance of cysteine (contains sulphur) for its production from the melanin precursor molecule, while eumelanin needs tyrosinase, and which ever is more abundant determines which form of melanin is produced, among other factors. Eumelanin has two forms, DHI and DHICA, it has been found that the DHI form is more resilient when absorbing frequencies/waves in the 500nm light band (around the green color/frequency band of the spectrum), while the DHICA form has been found to lose it dark color when exposed to such frequencies. The DHICA form of eumelanin was also found to be more pro-oxidant and photo-toxic than the DHI form in UV light/radiation.
